Abstract A novel ionic liquid(1) based on 8-hydroxyquinoline cation and HSO4- anion was firstly synthesized. The structure was characterized by 1H NMR, FT-IR, ESI-MS and elemental analysis. The physical properties and catalytic activity in esterification reaction of long-chain fatty acids were studied. The results showed that 1 exhibited low moisture absorption, obvious thermosensitivity in ethanol, and good catalytic activity for esterification reaction of long-chain fatty acids and ethanol. The yield of cetylic acid was up to 95.5%.
